PATRIOTIC APPRECIATION

With Memorial Day upon us and the Fourth of July just around the corner, what better time to honor a military member or military family for their service and personal sacrifice.

QATW encourages charity work in each swapper’s local community.  This year we are having a Patriotic Swap using traditional red, white & blue fabric (R,W,& B FQs from last month’s swap are perfect) to make a patriotic quilt that we encourage you to give locally to a veteran or veteran family.  It could even be your father or mother, spouse, son or daughter or other veteran family member.

The Quilt

The pattern we are using is a free pattern offered through the Quilts of Valor Organization.  As pictured, above, it will make a 60” x 76” quilt.  It is made up of 12 identical blocks that are made from 4 identical units.

 To Sign-up

To sign-up, post below and send a PM to jcorsbie.

The Fabric

We will be using red, white and blue fabrics with a touch of gold as pictured in the illustration below.  There should be a strong contrast between the fabrics.  All fabrics should clearly read their own color, i.e. a red and white small print should read as red for a red placement.  Tone-onTone, (ToT), and small prints will work the best and result in a better showing of the pattern.  For this swap the reds, whites and blues and gold are all traditional patriotic, clear colors.

 The Block

The 16-1/2" blocks are easy to make and consist of four (4) 8-1/2" identical units made of nine (9) pieces.  Be sure to keep your HST turned the same way in each unit. The diagram shows the size of each strip or HST.

For each block (of 4 identical units), cut:

Blue and White HSTs: Cut 2 blue squares and 2 white squares 2-7/8” to make these.

Gold and White HSTs:  Cut 2 yellow squares and 2 white squares 2-7/8” to make these.

Red Squares:  Four (4) Red Squares 2-1/2”x2-1/2”

White Squares: Four (4) White Squares 2-1/2”x2-1/2”

Red Rectangles:  Four (4) Red Rectangles 2-1/2”x4-1/2”

White Rectangles:  Eight (8) White Rectangles 2-1/2”x4-1/2”

Red Rectangles: Eight (8) Red Rectangles 2-1/2”x6-1/2”

Each swapper makes a minimum of 6 blocks; five will be mailed and one will be kept by the swapper.  If there are more than 6 swappers, you may elect to make enough blocks to equal the number of swappers (including yourself).  Keep one block for yourself.  Label each baggie with your given name and QATW nickname.

The Finish

Assemble the quilt interior per the illustration.  The illustration shows two borders; the first border is 6 strips cut 2-1/2” wide and the second border is 7 strips cut 4-1/4” wide.  You will also need 7 strips cut 2-1/2” wide for the binding.

The most important part is to gift it to a deserving veteran or veteran family with your heartfelt appreciation and respect.

Mail on or before the due date and include postage and mailing address.  If you want your blocks mailed back in a padded priority envelope, there is no need to include the envelope; I have plenty on hand.  If you prefer first class mail, please include a self-addressed and self-stamped envelope (SASE).

 Deadlines

Sign up by June 1  by posting below and sending a PM to jcorsbie.  Be sure to include your given name, QATW nickname, mailing and email addresses, and telephone number.

Mail on or before  June 30 and include a SASE if preferring first class mail (must be under 13 oz) or your mailing address and postage (PayPal, cash or check) for Priority.  I have the padded Flat Rate envelopes.

See you in the swap!

Perfect! I was ready to start a QOV to donate. Sign me up, please.  PM to follow.

Dumb question: is ONE block equal to 4 units? So in other words, we send in a minimum of 6 full blocks?

Yes, the block you send in is 4 of the smaller units.  And, you send in a minimum of 5 (and keep one for yourself) of the large block made of 4 units.

The red, white & blue FQs we swapped a couple months ago are perfect for this quilt.

Ok, just a quick question.  Are we using four identical units for each block or making it scrappy (using four different units to make up the block)?  Just want to make sure that if I join I do this right!

My sewing machine is calling me and today I hope to listen! Sally

Yes, four identical units for each block.  The quilt will still be scrappy because all the blocks will be different.

I seriously think I have gone mad! There I was, just a day ago, with utter conviction, convincing myself that I should take a break from swaps for a bit, then low and behold, guess what I tripped into.... Awe shoot, sign me up, I don't have anything better to do with my time, not like I have 6 kids, a full time job that I drive a minimum of 3 hours a day for, an acre and a half of yard and garden and "Mom Duty" (my mom) one night a week and every third weekend, just to start.  Sleep is entirely over rated!  :)

Seriously, I love this pattern, love the patriotic colors and especially love the vivid reds, and true blues and the All American look of this one!

Thanks Jann for hosting! I will send a pm

Just curious if anyone has sewn one up yet and if so, how long did it take, I am considering signing up twice!

Hi Diane, I haven't started on these yet.  I did pull my fabrics and I'll probably start cutting the pieces tomorrow after I wash them, especially the reds...dont' want any bleeding.  I imagine once you have the pieces cut, they will probably sew up quickly.  For me, the cutting and prepping process takes the longest.

Diane:  I did all my cutting at one time as well prewashing, so it is hard to give a total time,  But the sewing took me about 20-25 min per block (all 4 units assembled into one block). I only made one block that time and I think once you make one and then have all your cut pieces lined-up it will go even quicker.  Just got to watch that the turn on that on piece,
