The CW Sampler - Reds, Blacks & Creams

This quilt is made from twenty-four 12.5" blocks.  We'll make 12 of the blocks in round 1.

Make 6 baggies of 2 different 12.5" blocks - and keep 1 baggie for yourself.  (We'll be swapping 5 baggies of 2 different blocks.)

Use only red, black and cream Civil War fabrics.

Reds, blacks and creams are the ONLY colors that should be seen.  No solids, rubbery creams or bright reds, please.

Blocks will be inspected to make sure they are the right size and don't have severly blunted tips.

The postmark date needs to be on or before 6/18 for quilters inside the U.S. and 10 days prior for those quilting elsewhere.

To sign up, post below saying which blocks you will make for the group.  Please be sure to reference the letters below that correspond to the blocks that you'll create.  This will help those that aren't familiar with all of the names.  Or, if you'd like to make one or more blocks that don't appear in the picture above, just let us know the name(s).  (Please make sure there are at least 11 pieces in each block.)

It's so simple! Let's go, ladies!  This will be another fun one.

This is a gorgeous quilt.  Looked online last night to see if I could find some fabric to buy for it, but had a terrible time finding any "cream" background.  Not sure if I could get fabric ordered in time for this.

Sign me up for A and T please.  I'll pick a block for the T spot and let you know.  Pam

There is a large range of colors marketed as CW creams on-line.  This one seems a tad on the dark side, but it would probably be ok in limited quantities.  Shall I send you a few F4s of lighter creams?  If this is all that's holding you back, just say the word.  :)

I am having a hard time finding creams or telling what a cream would be for civil war as most of the backgrounds seem to be on the "tan" side.  I think I found one.  I did sign up though.

Just a fabric update -

Creams should try to be on the lighter side, but darker creams can be used in limited quantities. Also, it's ok if the creams have darker creams/light browns flecked into it, as long as it reads "cream."  Avoid creams with different colors (blues, greens, etc.).  Sound good?

I am excited about this swap.  I ordered fabrics.  Are we going to get instructions for the borders too?  Or will that be up to us?  Love the whole design!!

Tansie, you'll need to make the call ultimately, as sometimes fabric colors aren't portrayed accurately due to the flash.

A couple of the prints look like they have white in them - and if they do, they shouldn't be used.  But - it might be light cream in "real life" - and that would be fine.

The cream on the right is pretty, but I'd use it in moderation, as it's a little on the dark side.

The reds (especially the one in the middle) seem really bright - but that, too, could be the flash.  They should have that darker, "dirty" feel - and not shine. :)

Hope that helps.

I ordered my fabrics from Hoffmans of Paducah and from Bonnie Blue quilts.  Bonnie Blue has more blacks and lots of reds.  Bonnie Blue specializes in Civil War fabrics.

I'm headed out to the quilt shop tomorrow - I don't have any civil war fabrics in my stash!

I'm excited to get started.

Tansie, you bet.  :)  A lot of CW creams also have darker creams/light brown specs in them - and that's ok, too.  Just no other colors (green, blue, yellow, etc.)

Happy shopping!  I'm going to try to check out one more LQS on my lunch hour today, too.
