Does anyone know the origin of the Carpenter's Star Quilt Pattern?  Why it's called CS, who designed it, where?  I am making a CS for a friend and I'd like to be able to give her some info on the pattern since her husband was a carpenter by trade.

Sharon, I didn't find a lot on the original origins but did find these:

Carpenter's Wheel Quilt Block

The trades and occupations were often the inspiration for quilt block names. In early American family life, the Carpenter's Wheel also reflected the settler's need to be a jack-of-all-trades and self-sufficient. The Carpenter's Wheel is also said to have religious meaning, honoring the master carpenter of people's lives - Jesus.

Wagon Wheel/Carpenter’s Wheel

This was a signal to the slaves to pack the items that were needed for travel by wagon or that could be used while traveling. It could also mean to pack the provisions necessary for survival, as if packing a wagon for a long journey, or to actually load the wagon in preparation for escape. Some records indicate that this symbol meant a wagon with compartments in which slaves could hide.

Barb, thank you so much for this info.  I will check this info out and I really appreciate the time you took to respond.
